Thank you for responding, I was reading up on the PChuck's Website before
putting my post here. I don't think I can give you a browstat info on my Win
98SE PC (not supported) but I can give you the winipcfg data as below:
DOHH. Missed that detail. Try "browstat listwfw mshome", from ETPC-01. Also,
how about "ipconfig /all" from ETPC-01? The output from "ipconfig" doesn't do
the job.

OK, Edmund,
The "ipconfig /all" from etpc-01 indeed shows "Media disconnected" for the
Ethernet connection. Does the tooltray icon show "Status: Connected" at the
same time?
I note that "browstat status" shows "There are 2 servers in domain MSHOME", so
you do have connectivity, at least when browstat is run. Are you running all of
these diagnostics at the same time? This is very curious.
I'm inclined to run CDiag, and see what anecdotal diagnostic results we get, but
we can't do that without the IP address for etpc-01. :-(
What was the original problem that you experienced (that motivated you to un
install ZA, yet still be unable to ping the 2 computers from each other)?
Hi Chuck,
I have a LAN with 2 PCs (ETPC-01 with WIN XP Pro Sp2 & ETPC-02 with Win 98
SE). I used a cross over cable and internal dial-up modem. I have Zone Alarm
Free V5.5.094.00 installed on both PCs. I also have Internet Connection
Sharing installed. When I need to use ICS I turned the Firewall down to
Mediem on the host PC (ETPC-01).
Everything was working fine until I upgraded to the new Z/Alarm V6.0.667.00
for ETPC-01. When I upgraded I choose to try out the Pro version (15 Days
free trial). This Trial Pro Version has the option to configure and use the
Internet Connection Sharing/NAT Gateway. But I was having problem with my
Propel Accelerator. I waited until the 15 days trial was over and selected
the Free version.
This is when my problem really started, I don't know whether because I had
chose to use the ICS/NAT in the Trial Pro Version and now that it has rolled
back to the Basic Free version (which does not support ICS), it has somehow
corrupted some of my settings (eg TCP/IP, Client Networking, NATS, Winsocks
etc).
I then proceed to click "Repair" on my LAN it didn't have any effect. I ran
Network Setup wizard again (in fact several times). By the way, does it do
any harm to the LAN running the wizard several times and copying the Setup
disk to the ETPC-02 Pcs?. I then uninstalled Z/A (using Clean uninstall by
following instructions from Zone Alarm). I then try to ping the computers but
they could not ping each other. I could ping localhost on ETPC-01 and ETPC-02
but just not each other.
I have now re-installed Z/Alarm Free (V5.5.094) on both PCs. I have added
these PCs into each of their Trusted Zones on Z/Alarm. I then uninstall I
then uninstall Client for Microsoft Network and TCP/IP on ETPC-02. I
re-install Client for Microsoft Network and TCP/IP. I also added IPX/SPX and
NetBUEI on ETPC-02.
Now when I double click on Network Neiboughhood (ETPC-02) a Window open up
and shows an icon for Entire Netwok. When I click on this icon a dialog box
open up saying "Unable to browse the Network. The network is not acessible.
For more information, look in the Help Index at the topic Network Trouble
shooter". Interestingly when I try the Help Index for Networking, there was
no information. It just open up a blank window.Don't know whether this is
relevant for you diagnosis.
When I click on My Network Places (ETPC-01), View Work Group Computers. I
could see ETPC-01 and ETPC-02. I coulds open up the files for ETPC-01 but
when I click ETPC-02 I got the following message. "\\ETPC-02 is not
accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
Contact the administrator of this service to find out if you have access
permission. The network path is not found".
I have a VIA Rhine II Fast Ethernet Adapter on ETPC-01 and Realtek
RTL8139/810X Family Fast Ethernet NIC on ETPC-02. They both seems to be
working properly because the light is on. And my LAN Tray icon says Speed:
100.0 Mbps, Status: Connected.
Yes, the diagnostics were all run at the same time. I will run them again
and post on another thread because this is getting too long to read for you.
By the way how do you run CDiag? What info do you require to run this or you
can provide instructions or links to follow.
Thanks.
Edmund,
CDiag instructions:

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/05/using-cdiag-without-assistance.html
Thanks Chuck for the CDiag instructions, but it looks like it is beyond my
capabilities. Furthermore even if I could try, we wouldn't be able to run
CDiag on my other Win 98Se PC. So I don't think this would be of much help.
By the way, could you follow what I was trying to explain in my long winded
story about how I got myself into this fine mess? I also posted 4 new
diagnosis in another post (browstat status, browstat listwfw, ipconfig &
winipcfg).
Really appreciated your help. I have been trying to fix this problems for day.
Regards,
Edmund
OK, Edmund. That's a good description of what you've experienced to date, and
some of it may be key to getting you straight.
Now, to start, can you please type your replies under mine? That way, we can
both follow what's typed by the other more reliably, so we don't miss anything.
This is called bottom posting, and bottom posting is more effective in technical
help sessions.
Have you read my tutorial on Solving Network Problems? It's not heavily
technical, but it gives some background on methodology, that you'll need in this
case.

We need to start by solving the ping problems (ie TCP/IP connectivity). If
neither computer can ping the other (neither by name OR by IP address? please
confirm or deny), then you have more of a problem than will be solved by
installing IPX and NetBEUI. Please start by removing IPX/SPX and NetBEUI from
both computers.

http://nitecruzr.blogspot.com/2005/07/windows-networking-and-alternate.html
After you remove IPX/SPX and NetBEUI, check for LSP / Winsock problems. There
are 5 possible resolutions for this, and none of the 5 has proved to be any more
effective than the others.

Let's try and take this one step at a time, and I think we can straighten you
out. Just be patient and persistent.
Hi Chuck,
First time using forum, don't know about bottom posting. Here is a summary
of what I have done:
(1) Confirm, neither computer could ping each other.
(2) Have removed the IPX/SPX & NetBEUI from ETPC-02 (Win 98 SE PC).
(3) ETPC-01 (Win XP Pro PC) has TCP/IP only.
(4) Read the tutorial on Windows Networking & Problems with LSP/Winsock.
(5) Downloaded Winsock XP Fix and ran it on both Computers.
(6)After running WinsockXPFix on ETPC-01, noticed the LAN icon changed to
"Limited or No Connectivity". (Status now shows Connected after running
Network Setup Wizard).
(7)Disabled ICS (clear check box of "Allow other network users to connect
through this computer's Internet Connection).
(8) Ran Network Setup Wizard, created a Setup disk, run Setup disk on ETPC-02.
(9) System rebooted after coping files to ETPC-02.
(10) Waited for 45 minutes for system to re-establishes itself.
(11) On ETPC-02, Click on Network Neighbourhood, Click Entire Network,
Dialog box says "Unable to browse the network. The network is not accessible.
etc etc"
(12) On ETPC-01, Click on My Network Places, View workgroup Computers.
ETPC-01 & ETPC-02 is displayed.
(13) Could open up folders & files in ETPC-01. However when I click on
ETPC-02. got the following dialog box. "\\ETPC-02 is not accessible. You
might not have permission to use this network. Conteact the administrator of
this server etc, etc".
(14) Will now try and run "netsh winsock reset catalog" on ETPC-01, don't
know whether there is an equivalent tool for ETPC-02 (Win 98SE Pc)?
(15) Should I try and download LSP-Fix and WinsockFix and run these on my
two PCs as well? Would it dore more harm than good?
Looking forward to our next line of attack.
Thanks, Edmund
Edmund,
If you have an LSP / Winsock problem, all 5 procedures are essential. None of
the 5 has proved to be any more effective than any of the others. Please Google
this group for the various solutions, and note when one or the other was
reported as being a final solution.
You absolutely have to get where you can ping each computer from the other by IP
address. No ping = no connectivity. If you're running ICS on ETPC-01, ETPC-01
has to have an IP address 192.168.0.1, and ETPC-02 has to have an address on
192.168.0/24. Any deviation from either requirement indicates either:
1) No physical connectivity.
2) ICS not running on ETPC-01.
3) DHCP client not running on ETPC-02.
4) LSP / Winsock / TCP problem on one of the 2 computers.
Any possibility of getting a 3rd computer, for testing? You have to isolate the
problem - if you have 2 computers, you have to test each against the other. God
forbid you should maybe have 2 problems.
Work from the bottom up, and methodically. Make, and test, one change at a
time.
