Problem scanning film at 48 bits

I got my Epson 4490 scanner a few days ago, and have been scanning 35mm
film. Just one problem: I choose 48-bit color but I always get 24-bit
results. The scanner does support 48 bits and the software gives me the
option to choose it. Any ideas why this happens?

thanks

Are you saving in a format that only allows for 24 bits (e.g. jpeg)?

There is no real world advantage to scanning with this great a bit depth and
this type of scanner.
I recommend you scan in 8/24 bit color at 2000-2400 dpi and save your files
in a lossless format like tif.
When you understand more about the process of scanning, image manipulation
and processing you will have your original scans in a format that you can
process as you like.

I didn't know that jpeg only supports 24 bits. Thanks for the tip.

There's a newer jpeg standard that does support more. But the classical
standard is 24 bits.
