Problem resuming after log off profile

Our home PC is set up for 2 users/2 profiles. We use XP Home edition and it
has all it's updates.

The following problem started happening recently (about 2 weeks), and I
don't recall it correlating with any updates.

Normally when one of us logs off our profile, we are returned to the profile
screen. Then we can click on one of the profiles to resume use of the PC.
We don't require passwords to log in. This log off process is still working
properly.

However, after an undetermined amount of time the monitor goes black. In
the recent past (about 2 weeks ago?), all we had to do was move the mouse to
get the logon screen back. Now the logon screen does not appear. I can see
the mouse cursor moving on the screen, but that is all.

If I click cntl-alt-del, the logon screen will appear, but when I click on a
profile the PC just hangs. I have to restart the computer to get back to a
workable login screen.

I've already disabled hibernate mode. I searched for the hib*.sys (can't
remember the full name), so I could delete it, and it is not on either drive.
I'm certain I searched for hidden files as I also did a h*.sys search and
got many results, but not the hibernation system file.

In spite of disabling the hibernation mode, my monitor is still going asleep
after a certain amount of time. I have all power and monitor settings
currently set to stay on. I have a screensaver enabled.

I'm out of ideas as to how to fix this problem

Please accept my apologies for posting the same issue twice. I thought this
post got lost when I went to post it, so I created another on the same day.

Here is some additional information regarding this problem. If we do not log
off a profile, the screen-saver will start and go on indefinitely. Moving
the mouse activates Windows and takes us to the welcome screen. We can just
cilck on a profile again to resume work. So this problem ONLY seems to occur
when we log off.

Any help will be appreciated.
