Problem removing external usb storage

I have a 1 gig usb storage device and am having problems trying to "stop" it
so that I can safely remove the drive. I keep getting the "The device
'Generic volume' cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device later."

I've googled this message and see lots of problems, but no answers so I
thought I'd check here. The Jump drive went in last week and the computer
has been shutdown several times since then. Nothing is writing to the
device, so I don't have an application to stop as an answer.

Any ideas on what to do?

Temporarily disable your realtime virus scanner then see if you can safely stop the device.

If that doesn't solve the problem, right-click the drive in My Computer and select Properties from the menu. Select the relevant USB device from the list of all disk drives on the Hardware tab and click the Properties button. Select "Optimize for quick removal" on the Policies tab and click OK twice to save changes and exit.
