problem reinstalling xp home

Ok so i'm reinstalling my copy of XP Home SP1a, the disc that came with my
computer. It installs perfectly fine, no problem, but when it first boots up,
i get a notification saying my registry has error and i need to go to some
site and download a program to fix them. At this point, after installing my
modem, everything works fine. I then install SP2 from the installer file on
Microsoft's website. After I finish installation, my modem only connects at
half the speed it did before SP2.

Possibly unrelated to the problem, but I have reinstalled XP before on the
same computer, same disc, no problems. Then for Christmas I got a much needed
sound card, which caused my computer to crash whenver i was connected to the
internet, and at maximum it was half speed of what it should be, and playing
music. So i took the card out, uninstalled it, and modem was still connecting
at half speed. That's the point i reinstalled windows again and got the
errors above. Any suggestions?

if you are reinstalling
the o.s. because of the
modem, then it would
be better to get a better
modem.

external modems are far
better than internal ones
"especially" the ones provided
by the manufacturer,
in my opinion.

as a thought you might
want to double check
your bios/cmos and ensure
the setting set to "full".

also, check the homesite
to the modem and or your
computer and see if there
are any patches or updates
"and" information on
fine tuning the settings.

after you figure out what the
deal is with your modem,
you should then begin to
consider making a "slipstream"
of sp2 or sp3 into a fully
functional setup disk that
will alleviate your reliance
on the old disk with sp1.

registry is part of the operating system and completely independent of BIOS
right? So a fresh install of Windows shouldn't have any errors. Am I thinking

I might say that a bad modem card (and not hardware defective, just a
less than great card) might load drivers that might not work right or
corrupt your registry. Yes in a perfect world, your registry should
not be screwed on a reload. Okay, we don't live in a perfect world, and
Microsoft should have taught us that from day one. As cheap as modems
are (internal that is) I'd give another 9$ modem a try if you don't mind
another reload. But that's just me. And keep the store receipt.!

But after re-reading your message, I think I may be totally wrong too,
as I think you are saying that you load the OS, then boot and get the
error while your modem is not installed. Right? If so, the screw my
suggestion. But if the modem was in the machine during the install and
reboot, maybe we're onto something.

you see, if you simply
have faulty hardware,
this would inhibit windows
during normal operations
or during an install.

ideally, if you reinstalled
windows everything should
be perfect,.

however, this logic is faulty
because what if you had bad ram
or a bad disk or a bad cmos
battery required for the bios
of your motherboard.

unfortunately, windows is a
pretty good operating system
but if it were a perfect operating
system then it could extend
two mechanical arms to
fix the faulty hardware.

also, people have a tendency
of installing additional software
into windows, thus causing the
instability of windows if the
other software/drivers are
not compatible.

what i suggest is to simply
remove the modem then
see if your windows is
becomes stable and error
free.

if it is then you are likely
holding the problem in
your hand.

however, if the errors are
still occurring,then perhaps
the modem is not the problem.
so it could be malware or
other non microsoft software.

You probably don't. The so-called "error" message you've cited is
typical of many malware scams. Did you install an anti-virus program
and activate your firewall before connecting to the Internet? If not,
you're likely infected.
