Problem opening DOS windows

Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 Pro SP3 workstation that has problems when opening a
DOS windows. For example, if I execute CMD, a DOS windows opens then closes
immediately. If I execute REGEDIT, same thing happens. Ditto for other
applications that operate under DOS (OMNIS et al.). However, Word, Excel and
other 32-bit applications work fine.

REGEDIT works in safe mode. I controlled the registry for the presence of
viruses and it seems ok. Also scanned the workstation for viruses and none
found, even though I have the impression that the registry has suffered.

I installed SP4 (that had to be installed in "safe mode", otherwise the
Service Pack would not install) but the problem is still the sa me.

Any ideas gratefully received.

This is normally virus activity. If you have Microsoft Office what happens when you go to Start | Run | winword | OK?

launched through Start | Run ...

Trying to detremin which .EXE have been infected, modified.
