Problem moving winxp to new motherboard

I've recently tried to move my winxp installation to a new machine with
a different motherboard (HAL not the same). For info, the installation
had recently been upgraded from win2000 professional to winxp.
I tried to follow the procedure on how to do a repair install but
instead of discovering the already installed winxp, the procedure just
installed a new instance of winxp. When checking the system I discovered
that the "old" winxp was installed under c:\winnt but the new winxp was
installed under c:\windows. Could that be the reason why the
repair/install procedure didn't discover the existing winxp ?
Any suggestions to how I should proceed ? I still have the old HW so
maybe I should boot the old winxp from that and change systemroot and
then retry repair/install ?

Thanks,
Per W.

All files/folders on the hd must be deleted,a new copy of xp is the only
way to go with a new board.Install xp cd,boot to xp cd (configure in BIOS),
select recovery,press enter for password,then type:DiskPart In
DiskPart,delete
the partition(s),create one, then press Esc Back in cmd type:FORMAT C:
/FS:ntfs
When its thru type:EXIT Restart, reboot to xp cd,then select install xp.

Reformatting and reinstalling all my programs (20 something) is not
something I'd want to do. Sure there must be a better way to solve this ?

It's the best way to do it to give you a stable system and you can use
the opportunity to update all your drivers.

An alternative is to go into the hardware and delete ALL the devices
from the old system then re-boot and install XP so it picks up all the
devices anew and installs its own drivers. It's unlikely to give you as
stable a system and is not a lot quicker, in fact if it goes wrong it's
a lot slower.
