Problem in joining a Win2k domain

D

DX

I set up a win 2k server as PDC. Installed DNS, DHCP, and
looks like they are up normally because the event log
tells me no errors. Then I try to join the domain using a
win NT machine (a switch is placed between the server and
the client). However, an error message on the client
says: The domain controller for this domain cannot be
located.

Questions:

1). How can I fix this problem

2). I did some web research. Some said I need to set up
the lmhosts file. I tried but didn't work. Some suggest
I need to ping the server name from the client and see if
there's network problem. But I just don't understand how
can I ping the server while my client's IP is set to use
DHCP and when I type "ipconfig /all" I only see 0's for
the IP address.

Thank you for the advice.

Have you tried "hard coding" an IP address to your client
pc?

thanks for the reply.
I did assign an IP manually and same network mask and
gateway address as the PDC. I could ping the PDC after
that, but that wouldn't fix my original problem...

That's a switch and not a router between the NT4 client and the W2k domain
controller? Nt4 and Win9x uses NetBIOS broadcasts to "find" the domain, and
not DNS as does W2k clients to W2k or W2k3 DCs.

If there is a router between them? Routers do not allow such broadcasts
across them. Switches do unless that feature was turned off.

From the NT4 client, can you ping the W2k DC by it's hostname (such as
"server" instead of "server.domain.com")?

Is NetBIOS disabled on the W2k DC?

Keep in mind, the term "PDC" is a legacy term and does not apply to W2k or
W2k3 domain controllers.

In addition to Ace's comments, remember you have to join an NT4 machine to a
Win2k domain by the domain's NetBIOS name.
