problem getting mixed W2K/XP network running

I consider myself a fairly savvy computer user, but a seemingly simple
problem has me completely baffled. I've tried all the obvious solutions, and
I'm at the desparate stage.

I have a network comprising two XP machines and a W2K machine. All machines
can ping each other. The W2K machine can network successfully to the XP
machines (ie can see shared folders). Neither XP machine can see the shares
on the W2K machine.

When an XP machine tries to access the W2K I get "The <W2K machine> does not
accept remote requests". Why not? What do I need to do to make it do so? The
W2K machine is the very latest security patch.

It's clear the XP machines don't have access to the W2K machine. What's it
supposed to have, and where do I set it?

This network used to (6 months ago) work fine, but there's been a lot of
fiddling on the W2K machine, and obviously something's broken. The XP
machines haven't been touched.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

Make sure all computers are in the same workgroup and that all useraccounts
exist on all computers. Got File- and printersharing loaded?

All computers are in the same workgroup. File & Printer sharing is loaded.
Why do I need all user accounts on the W2K machine? I've had this network
working before and I never needed it.

XP and W2K just want to know the users, because they rely on security and
permissions.

I'm sure this is not the explanation. I've NEVER had to
set user names to get Microsoft Networking going for the
past many years. If the machines were part of a domain it
would be a different matter.

I've noticed there are many others in this newsgroup with
exactly the same problem. They have XP 'clients' and a
W2K 'server'. The common thread seems to be that they've
all recently applied the most recent security patch. It
smells like Microsoft have tightened things up just a tad
too much with the latest patch, or something else of
significance has changed in relation to security.

Hi Mike,
I agree with you. I am having problems since I installed
recent critical updates "Security Update for Microsoft
Windows (KB824105) on Sept 10". A lot of people are seeing
this one way pinging.

context:
I have a w2k and xp in my home network. w2k can ping and
see xp but xp cannot ping w2k. It seems that w2k is not
responding to the ping, tracert etc.

thanks,
Gaurav
