problem encrypting data in windows xp home

dan t.

Hi. I've got Windows XP Home on my HP notebook. When I
try to encrypt files or folders using Windows explorer
(properties | advanced) the "Encrypt contents to secure
data" checkbox is grayed out.

I am using NTFS and I've installed all the relevant
Windows Updates I can find, to no avail. The only ref I
find to this in MS's knowledgebase is to an obscure
problem involving the French edition of Windows 2000 (!).
HP tech support is stumped. Why is this command
unavailable to me, and how do I get it back?

Hi

Windows XP Home does not support native file encryption (EFS),
you will need to use a 3rd party product to be able to encrypt
files, some links here:

http://securityadmin.info/faq.htm#harden [encryption is the last item here]

File encryption is only available with Windows XP Professional.

Hi Dan,

Windows XP Home edition does not support EFS. If you need EFS, you will have
to upgrade to Windows XP Professional.

Don't forget to make a backup copy of you private keys, once you have EFS up
and running!
