problem after virus, update to SP2

A friend's computer had gotten virus clogged so she asked me for help. She
was at SP1 with no firewall (this is Win XP Home) and had 160+ spam/virus
thingies, with about 10 critical items. After getting the system basically
clean with some malware eradicators (like Ad-Aware, Spybot, Ewido), I
upgraded her to SP2 (I had a CD SP2 upgrade disc).

Now we have 2 basic problems: Windows Update isn't working - we go to the
site, the site says it's checking, then nothing happens (site never
responds); We also fail to shut down when quitting windows. The Ctrl-Alt-Del
dialog, when we choose Shut Down, Turn Off seems to work. But the normal
way, from the Start Button, it gets stuck.

What's best way to proceed to get Windows Update to work and this shut down
problem? Any help greatly appreciated.

Did you actually use a virus scanner of any sort or just scanned for
spyware. If not then I think you need to it still sound like you have
something in there. Try using the scanners in safemode & if you are still
not successful then uninstall SP2 and try the scanner again.
