Problem adding workstation to domain

Hi
I have a W2k client which i'm trying very hard to add to a DC which is in
another subnet. The DC is a WINS client to a server which is in the same
segment as the client. There are other DCs in the same segment as the client.
I used ethereal to see what's happening and saw that if a DNS query cannot
find the DC, the WINS service will be used to find it. This is what happens
when the client and a DC is in a same segment and when trying to add a client
to a domain. However, when I try adding the client to the DC on another
segment, (this time I set at client to point to the DC as the DNS client),
its fails in the DNS query and returns SAM unknown logon 0x18 and then few
ICMP packets with destination unreachable.

How to solve this.

First, you get the terminology correct and you make it simple for us to
understand what you have.

You don't add a W2K client to a DC. A DC is a domain controller and you
don't add computers to domain controllers. You add them to the domain.
What does this mean, "The DC is a WINS client to a server..." The DC IS a
server. Is there another DC that is a PRIMARY WINS server? Do any of these
have names or can you use DC1, DC2, etc.?

Why would a DNS query not find a DC? Perhaps we need to know something
about your network design, like how you connect segments?! WINS is NetBIOS
naming. DNS is TCP/IP naming. If your client and your DC are in the same
segment and they can't communicate, perhaps you should be checking the log
file and possibly the DNS settings. You don't need Ethereal to tell you
what's going on.

Is NetBIOS a routing protocol? How are the segments connected? Is there a
router involved? Firewall? VLAN? Currently I have more questions than
answers. Can you show the IPCONFIG /ALL of the the systems involved?
