private Gaming Servers - Age of Empires II

Hallo,

as we did some network games we now had some problems with games like
Age of Empires with four players. But we have a 4x XEON Windows 2000
Terminal Server with some GB of RAM at home and so there was the idea
to
kill network problems by playing this game from a terminal server
client
(RDP, Citrix not available).
While the game can be installed it refuses the CD-ROM from the Windows
XP Clients local CD-ROM drive (available via explorer as drive letter
X:).

Is there any way to make the game work?

Thanks for help

Regardless of how fast the Terminal Server is the client performance will be lack-lustre at best. Video games require rapid and constant screen refresh, which Terminal Server & Citrix are not meant for. Interesting choice of useage for a $10,000-$15,000 machine. I think you're fighting a losing battle

If you don't beleive me try going to a website with a lot of flash or shockwave animation, or even mpeg video and you'll see that the Remote Desktop Client just can't repaint the screen fast enough to prevent studder. Aside from end user performance You'll also find that video games use loads of CPU cycles & RAM, which will quickly soak up the available resources of even the fastest SMP Server

You could try to use a program like fakecd or cdemu to emulate the cdrom,
however I don't think you'll solve your network problems with running a game
in a thin client environment.

Re,

you're right at the point that the problem itself will not be solved
by
creating a workaround by a game server. but, in my case, as the Age of
Empires II game interrupts for all users playing only if one client
has
trouble with his network connection we decided to look for a solution
while we
also try to solve our problem.
We changed some software and hardware components, and still are unable
to name the problem; the advantages are clear: if the trouble is
really based on the network, the client simply disconnects and can
reconnect by his/her RDP-client.
the other players will continue.

Thank you for help
