privacy issue

I am concerned that data is secretly hidden on your hard drive and even if
you think that you have deleted it, you actually haven't!! I have downloaded
two programs, one called index.dat suite which apparently cleans out your
index.dat files by creating a batch file that runs when you restart your
computer. On the surface this seems to work then the second program that I
downloaded is called recover my files and when you run that wow, it shows
you every file that you have ever used, viewed etc and thought that they were
gone forever, Scary to say the least. Now the big question is, #1 why are
there so many progs out there that claim to erase all traces of your
internet history if the truth is they don't, they just clear out your ie
history and temp folders, you can do that yourself. #2 how do you make these
files unrecoverable even with recovery programs.

The internet is a great idea but it is becoming so costly and so intrusive
that unless people are made to feel at ease with issues relating to privacy
and security I think that it will take a dive.

Be very careful about how you use it..

Actually, there are only two programs out there that will do what you
want. One is Evidence Eliminator (approximately $150 for a single user
license); I can't remember the other program's name.

The 'shredder' that you refer to above may do a good job of overwriting
unused disk space, but there are several things that it doesn't do:

Wipe the Page File.
Wipe data streams from the drive.
Underwrite directories and files.

Evidence Eliminator does all of this - and more - and when properly
used, Forensic software such as Encase cannot recover files that were
wiped by Evidence Eliminator.
