Prior windows won't stay open when IE goes to new window/website

I have IE 6.0 SP2 running on Windows XP SP1. Beginning
only recently, whenever I open a new window in IE
(whether by clicking on a link or opening a new version
of IE from the desktop), the prior window closes, and no
matter what I do, I can't seem to keep more than one
window open at a time (even by right-clicking on a link
and clicking on "Open a New Window"). The problem only
occurs on my desktop; IE works fine when other family
members are using their desktops.

I have checked all the file associations referred to in
the reply to "Shell" dated 8/22/04, and I checked all
the .dll files and registry key settings listed in MS KB
Article 281679. I also compared the file associations in
another family user's desktop for IE with mine, and they
were identical.

This is very frustrating, as I cannot use the "Back"
button or the taskbar to return to previously visited
sites once they close. HELP!!!

Thanks.

Sorry - this is the original poster again. I just read
the replies to Jose Tome on 8/21. The "Reuse windows for
launching shortcuts" box is unchecked, so that is not an
issue. Ctrl-N does not work to open a new window without
closing the old one. And I don't think pop-up blockers
are the problem (although it is possible), since any
blockers I may have would seem to affect all users
equally, but the problem only occurs on my desktop. I use
Norton Antivirus 2004 as internet security/virus control,
but I am not sure how to change it to resolve this
problem, if that is the cause.

Still befuddled.
