printing problems

Suddenly can't print from IE following error message
firstly my printer although set as default does not appear
anymore have to select it then get the following error
message in IE:

An error has occurred in teh script on this page
Line: 1174
Char: 1
Error: Unspecified error
Code: 0
URL: res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/preview.dlg
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

It makes no difference whether I select yes or no.

I can't print from word or excel or anywhere
not even a test page

I downloaded all the windows critical updates patches etc
and I have also tried deselecting 'Enable third-party
browser extension' and restarted but that didn't seem to
help either.

I am trying to print my thesis at the moment and any help
would be greatly appreciated
