Printers have disappeared from printers and faxes

PC with WinXP Pro (all updates)

My printer icons have all disappeared from my Printers and Faxes
viewer. The spooler service is running, and is set to Automatic, as it
should be. I can still print to any already installed printers via any
application, but if I try to add one with the "Add Printer Wizard" or
by going to <File<Add Printer, nothing happens at all.

Any thoughts?

I just finished fixing a very similar problem. Somehow the cfgmgr32.dll file
in the windows\system32 directory was replaced with a very downrev version. I
found this by running the File Signature Verification Utility from the System
Information Console. I replaced the file from a working system, rebooted and
all is now working.
