Printer Woes

Hello All,

I have a home network set up as follows:

#1: (Len-pc) pc with vista home premium and a brother printer directly
installed via usb.

#2: (Familypc) pc with xp sp2 and a hp printer directly installed with
parallel cable.

#3: (Amypc) pc with windows me and no printer installed.

#1 (vista) can print to itself and to #2 (xp).
#2 (xp) can print to itself and #1 (vista).
#3 (me) can print to #2 (xp) but *not* to #1 (vista)

When I try to print to #1 (vista) I get the following error in a dialog box...

There was an error writing to \\Len-pc\ Brother HL-5140 for printer (Brother
HL-5140 series): The network printer is no longer available. Contact your
system administrator, or try using a different printer. The printer will be
set to work offline. To save your print job, in the local printer queue,
click ok.

On #3 (me) On the desktop I can doubleclick on *My Network Places* and then
on *Entire Network* and then on *MSHOME*. This will show all 3 computers on
the network. Amypc, Familypc and Len-pc. All is well with Amypc and
Familypc, but when I double click Len-pc iget the following dialog box...

\\Len-pc is not accessible.
This device does not exist on the network.

I am at a loss and would really appreciate any help you may have. I hope I
haven't made this needlessly harder to understand, but I wanted to be as
thorough as possible.

Thank you in advance.

Hi Len. Which one is the desktop? Is that the Windows ME computer?

This might help you:
Cannot Authenticate to a Shared Folder from a Windows Vista-based Computer
If you cannot authenticate when accessing a shared folder from a Windows
Vista-based computer on a computer running a version of Windows prior to
Windows XP (such as Windows 98 or Windows 95), a computer running an
operating system other than Microsoft Windows, or to a network device, the
cause might be a mismatch in the configured support for NTLM 2, an
authentication protocol that is used for file and printer sharing
connections. By default, Windows Vista is configured to use NTLM 2.

To resolve this issue, you can do one of the following:

• Enable NTLM 2 support on the computer or device to which the Windows
Vista-based computer is attempting to connect. For computers running
versions of Windows prior to Windows XP, see How to enable NTLM 2
authentication. For computers running operating systems other than Windows,
see the operating system's product documentation for information about how
to enable NTLM 2 support. For network devices, see the device's product
documentation or Web site for information about how to enable NTLM 2 support
or download a firmware update that supports NTLM 2. This is the preferred
solution.

• If you cannot update the computers running operating systems other
than Windows or your network devices to support NTLM 2, change the
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel
registry value on the computer running Windows Vista to 1. This solution is
not recommended.

Hello Gloria,

Thank you for responding. All 3 computers are desktops. Computer #3 is the
one running windows ME. I did a search on what you descibed. I found
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/239869.

It says:

APPLIES TO
• Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server
• Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 4
• Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 5
• Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
• Microsoft Windows 98 Standard Edition
• Microsoft Windows 95

Should I give it a shot even though I'm running ME on the problem computer?

Sorry, Len, I misunderstood this <<<On the desktop I can doubleclick on *My
Network Places*>>>.

About the NTLM info, I think it should apply to Windows ME as well. I was
told anything "pre-XP" which indicates ME would be included. I'd be
interested in hearing the outcome of this.

Thanks,
Gloria

Hello Gloria,

I tried your suggestion. I installed the DSClient software and the enabled
NTLNv2. Still no luck. The Windows ME computer can not access the Vista
computer or the printer attached to the Vista pc.
