Printer Spooler Keeps hanging

MANISH

Hi,

I have a Win2k Server SP3 as print server. It has got 140 printers
configured in it.For few days it's print spooler keeps on hanging.
Suddenly the prints are stopped and system stops responding. If you
RDP to it , it responds slowly. Eventually if you try to stop spooler
service it ends up giving error "Didn't respond in timely fashion" ,
then if you kill spoolsv.exe process and remove all *.shd , ".spl
files from system32\spool\printers directory. Everything come backs
fine. System starts behaving normally and print jobs start working.

I don't know why this is happening as their are no relevant eror msgs
in log.
where should I look for any problem ?

Also how can I automate this process. I thought after print jobs are
completed, their spool file is automatically deleted.

Cheers,
Manish.

As far as I can tell, there are several different causes for this kind of
problem. The referenced URL is to an MSKB search that seems to list quite a
few that may be the cause of your problem. The number of printers bothers
me, and I don't rememer if there is a limit that 140 printers may be above.
