Printer Sharing and Preferences

Guest

I have searched high and low on how to get Vista to share a printer with XP
machines and not disable Printer Preferences on the vista machine. I found a
support article on the Vista web page that said Vista requires you to have
authorizzation, but they do not offer how to get it or HOW IT IS DONE IN XP.
Infact every where I look addresses how to in VISTA and completely ignores
the idea the some one may have a XP machine. Please let me/us know how we
can make the systems work togeather!

Can you provide us with more details.....

To which PC is the printer connected.... I believe in this case you mean
your printer is attached to the Vista PC but you're not clear.

What make and model printer are you referring to?

Ok here is the setup.
I have 5 XP machines all with local printers and one HP laptop with VISTA.
I have mainly HP deskjet 970 printers but I also have some older HP printers.
I am sharing the printers on each of the XP machines with the network.

I am on a workgroup with all of the computers including VISTA; MSHOME. I
have also sucessfully installed the printers on the XP machine and they
print. The problem lies on the VISTA MACHINE. I can not change the default
print settings or any print setting for that matter for my shared printers.

Vista wants "permission" to use the print properties on the shared printers.
XP does not offer a way to change premission on a workgroup setting.

To recap Printers on XP using them from VISTA with no print settings for
lack of permission.

What are the security settings on the printer shared from the XP Home
machines?

Printer, Properties, Security

Verify Everyone is allowed Print rights.

Also on the XP machines, verify that the Guest account is enabled since you
do not require passwords (it sounds like it already is).

Also from the Vista machine, you should be able to view the directory
contents of the print$ share on the XP machines
dir \\XPmachinename\print$

If you do not get the directory list then you will need access to this to
get the driver files.
