Printer issues with XP update

Guest

Thank you in advance for your time and insight. After downloading (automatic
9-16-07) the latest XP update (13Mb) I cannot use my HP printers – reloading
the drivers did not help nor turning off the firewall. Laptops without update
same printers work. Any help, insight or direction is greatly appreciated in
solving this problem.

Wayne,

Open Control Panel, then Add/Remove Programs.
Make sure the 'Show updates' box at the top right is checked.
Scroll down to the bottom and look under 'Windows XP-Software Updates '
On 9/16, which updates were installed ?
Please list the KB numbers of said updates.
*Also*, check further up the list to see if any HP 'software' was
installed along with the updates on 9/16

You're mowst welcome, Wayne. From what I've read, Service Packs for
Office can not be uninstalled. One must uninstall Office and then
reapply SP3:

You cannot remove service packs for Office 2003 products
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873125

There is nothing listed in the 'Known issues after you install the
service pack' in regards to printing:

Description of Office 2003 Service Pack 3
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923618/

The OneNote 2003 SP3 page doesn't even mention removing it, so my take
is that one would have to also uninstall OneNote when SPs are applied as
there is no way to uninstall SPs.
Frankly, I'm no expert when it comes to Office. Just reading the KBs
made me want to have a drink <w>

The Outlook Junk E-mail Filter doesn't *appear* to have any correlation
to this printer issue.

So, that leaves us with the HP 'software'.
I cannot use my HP printers – reloading the drivers did not help nor turning off the
firewall. Laptops without update same printers work.

A quick perusal of the Office newsgroup didn't show any threads related
to printing failures and the installation of SP3.

What I would do in your situation would be to first check the printing
queues of the systems that cannot print and clear them.
Open Control Panel and then Printers and Faxes.

*Is a Default printer listed ?*

Double click the Default HP Printer
Are there jobs listed ?
If so, click Printer, Cancel all Documents
Then right click each job listed and choose Delete

See if the Default printer functions now.

Please provide a description of how the printers are connected to the
systems that can and can not print.
Does all printing fail or just when using a certain application on the
problematic systems ?

When the updates were installed were there any Office services or
programs running ?

I'll wait until you provide the answers to the above in regards to
further steps.

Sorry for the delayed response – extended travel – limited access to
internet. Your ideal of asking me how the printer was connected (USB) led me
to inspect my connection and found that the cable was “pinchedâ€.

After replacing the cable and reloading the printer software, needless to
say, it worked.

Thank you for your professionalism, patience and pertinence in directing me
to the problem.

You're most welcome and way too kind, Wayne. Glad to hear the printer is
working properly now.
I was busy too and just got back to this thread today.
Now to watch some baseball.
