printer driver type performance: pcl vs. post script

Hi all,

It seems that all agree that pcl is more efficient than post script,
unless you need very good graphics and resolution which is best
provided by ps.

However, I noticed that in a terminal server environment, WAN printing
is o lot faster using post script drivers (talking about HP laser jet
and color laser jet printers). I tried using pcl but it was creating
huge spool files and printing time were painfully long.

Is it me who didn't configure these printers right or have I missed the
point ?

Thanks and Regards

I suppose you have 2000 Servers for your terminal server environment.
I know that the hp drivers for 2000 server and clients produce PCL-code
that takes a lot of time to print espacially for old hp printers (4 and 5
series).
If you can use original hp drivers and take care to use vector fonts and
hp-gl2 graphics.
With xp or 2003 servers the os-drivers are much more effective.
Difference hat about factor 4 (4minutes with old hp printers using original
2000 drivers versus
less than one minute for modern drivers).
