Print quality problem

I have a Brother HL-1240 monochrome laser printer. Every time I print I get
a pale band about 2cm wide in the direction of the paper flow. I have tried
cleaning the printer and shaking the toner cartridge gently
side-to-side(which has plenty in it) but nothing makes any difference. To
my inexpert eye it seems that in one area across the paper little toner is
being applied.

What would cause that and can it be prevented?

Can this be fixed with the current cartridge?

If not will a new cartridge fix it?

it could be damaged developing drum. So, if you get toner together with
developing unit, it will probably solve your problem.

As Sleeperman suggested it is probably the drum, but two things to check
are.....Remove the drum unit.
1. Look inside the printer to the back, you should see one of the fuser rollers
(usually orange), check to see if there is a corresponding mark on that roller.
Unfortunately you can't see the other fuser roller without removing the covers
and the fuser. Generally speaking, poor print with these printers is the drum
or fuser (assuming the toner has been replaced) and although drums do not
always have any visible signs of wear, fuser rollers usually do.
2. Also inside the printer immediately above the drum unit are the laser
optics, there is a black bezel and in the middle of that bezel is a long piece
of glass, hard to see but if it is dirty it will produce light print, maybe
some dust has collected on it in one spot (not uncommon), it can be cleaned
with a dry cloth and stubborn marks removed with a non abrasive glass cleaner.
