Primary DC down why don't other DC allow clients to login

Today we had to shutdown our primary DC and when we did
this users were not able to logon to the domain even
though we have a DC on the local subnet in the same site
as our primary and another DC in a remote side. Anyone
have any ideas why this would happen. Thank You

You need to make one of the other DC a GC and then you need to also point
the clients alternate DNS to one of the other DC.

Marc,

In addition to DNS and GC, please consider that the five
FSMO Roles should also be taken into account. If the DC
that was shut down held any of the five then you will
need to - at the very least - transfer those roles that
it held to another DC. If that DC was shut down in less
than favorable circumstances ( and will never return to
the domain ) then you might just need to SEIZE any of the
FSMO roles that the DC held. You would do this with
NTDSUtil. Please be aware, though, that if you seize any
of the roles using NTDSUtil that the DC that formerlly
held them can never return to the Domain.
