Preview Pane REALLY slow except when O. Express open

When using the preview pane Outlook, it was taking like 5
seconds before the preview came up, for EACH new message
I clicked on. I tried everything to fix this - "detect
and repair", disk defrag - everything I could think of.
Then, serendipitiously, I opened Outlook Express, and
Outlook's preview pane began working very quickly and
normally. Once I closed Outlook Express, the Outlook
preview when back to preforming like molasses. Any ideas?
