Preview Monitor will not play video from collections (clips)

When I select a video clip from one of my collections, It will not play in
the Preview Monitor. However, if I drag the clip into the time line or
storyboard -- I can play it from there just fine. This occurs on all video
files..

If I access the video file from (movie maker on) my old computer -- it works
fine..

I have seen others post the same questions and it is always disregarded as a
file type incompatibility. This is not a file type problem, as the files are
native wmv's captured directly using movie maker.

OK, so I reduced hardware accelleration, and now it plays...
Guess I will look for updated device drivers...

I've got the same problem, but then the other way round: collection plays
just fine, but the timeline only brings up audio. I'll try hardware
acceleration, but it's still weird.
