"preparing to copy" takes forever

I'm copying 4GB from a DVD to my hard drive. I'd like to know what's behind
Window's design that it can't just "do it", but instead takes 10 minutes
"preparing to copy". Is it checking file size? Doubtful given that I could
start the copy with only 2GB free, and I'd only get a failure halfway
through the copy when the disk was full. Really, what is Windows doing that
takes so long, and is it really necessary? Is there some configuration I can
change that will turn off this "feature"?

I am currious to get some sort of answer to that question as well: What
is Windows doing exactly when Microsoft Explorer comes up with that
dialog "Preparing to Copy"? I know it is doing some sort of checking,
but what all, what exactly, etc. - THANKS for any help on that.
