Prepare HD for embedded

Hello

I'm beginning to learn about "WindowsXp embedded"
I want make a small Server on a CF Card, for controlling my house.
I looked some Tutorial Videos and collect Information.

Now, I`m on the point, to test a Image, but the Target Designer build no
Image ... it build the collection of files in the Output Directory.

When I put a new HD fpr testing in the machine (second Boot Device), how I
have to prepare the HD for embedded?

In a video I see, that the Image Folder copy over an existent Installation,
but what Installation it was?

Does I have WinXP to install on the second HD, to bekomme a Bootable Device
und should I delete later everything? Maybe then I should copy all files
from the Output Directory to the new HD?

I hope you unterstand my Question ... How I bekomme a Bootable Device for
Embedded? Is there a tool or must I install WINxp first?

Thank you a lot

Hannes

PS: Did you know a german Forum for win Embedded?

I don't think you need to install WINxp. There is a folder named utilities
in the Target Designer intallation folder. In thar folder you can find a
bootprep.exe file. You can use this DOS utility to make your HDD or CF card
bootable.

The best way is to format the CF card under DOS. Make sure that the CF card
is in a CF to IDE adapter, boot the system to DOS and format the drive. Then
use the Bootprep utility to change the boot sector for XP/XPe.

I am not 100% sure I am following what you are doing...

1. If you are trying to do dual boot, then you need to configure the Target
Device Settings for the arc path and drive letter. The following article
discuses more about dual booting:
http://www.seanliming.com/Docs/XPE Dual Boot Tips.pdf

2. If the CF card is going to be the boot device, prepare the disk as I
described below on the target system, then use a USB to CF adapter on the
develoment machine to transfe the image to the CF card.

3. You need to talk to your local Microsoft distributor about licensing.
Someone in the NG know who to contact.

I suspect that the video was just an example for the system they used. The
PDF discusses how to handle and set the correct drive letter.
