I'm running Windows XP Pro on a Dell desktop. Several
times recently, while searching for files, I've noticed
the files coming up in their 'normal' location and also
in the Windows\Prefetch folder. I've done a bit of
searching, and found:

1) Instructions on how to create a batch file to
automatically delete the files in the prefetch folder,
and

2) A recommendation to clean out all files (or at least
those more than 3 weeks old) from the prefetch folder
every month

Unfortunately, none of the information I tracked down
actually explained what prefetch is/does. An explanation
and any recommendations about cleaning out the folder
would be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Lisa

Prefetch helps files and applications load faster. I've never tried running
without it on XP so I can't tell you whether it does or doesn't but many
people find when the first install XP it seems to run a bit slower than they
thought. However, after a week or so, it begins to improve. This is
usually due to prefetch.
