PPT Viewer 2003 - Ragged Edges - Text Slightly Off When Boxed

L

Lloyd Lindsay

Why do I keep finding bugs in PPT Viewer 2003?

I prepare and edit PPT presentations. I want them to run on as many
computer configurations as possible.

I don't want a presenter to get any undocumented, annoying surprises.

Here's what happens with a simple straight forward PPT Presentation
with simple, basic transitions and animations.
Hi:

Presentation runs terrific on PPT XP and PPT 97 Viewer, but not well
on PPT Viewer 2003. I even tried saving the file in the PPT 2000 and
earlier version formats. The results were the same. Here are the
issues:

In PPT Viewer 2003, the text has ragged edges and when using boxes,
out of line. On a projection screen it's not as noticeable, but on a
computer monitor it is.

Are these known problems for PPT Viewer 2003?

It looks like the expression "dumbing down" applies here. <ROTFL>

Animated text (even when sitting still) that goes all dog-chewed is a known
issue; MS is aware of it. If removing the animation doesn't remove the
raggedies, then you may have found a new problem. If so, let us know, and
either way, please let MS know that it's giving you problems:

I don't experience the same problem, but there are probably more details
that we need.

Are you animating the text or anything else on the slide? What fonts are
you using and what font sizes? Are you using light colored fonts on a dark
background, or a dark font on a light background?

Are you testing it in PowerPoint and in the Viewer *on the same system*?

I'm not clear about what you mean by "when using boxes out of line".

By the way, never save a presentation in the PowerPoint 97-2000 and 95
format unless you need to distribute it to someone who only has PowerPoint
95. That format is really 95 format and is uncompressed.

Hi Steve and Sonia:

Thanks for your replies. I have the ragged edge problem with PPT
Viewer 2003, not PPT Viewer 97. And it happens for all presentations.

As I mentioned before, the ragged edges are more noticeable when
viewing the presentation on a monitor.

I realize you don't want attachments in this news group. But, I could
send you a file with only one or two slides for you to test if you
give me an alternate E-mail address. (possibly to Microsoft).

Many of my presentations were created in versions prior to PPT XP
(2002). But, I normally run them in PPT XP and when I save them on
exiting, they automatically go into the PPT XP file format.

It's the 2003 viewer that seems to have the problem.
And it happens for all presentations.

With or without animations applied to text?

viewing the presentation on a monitor.

Not surprising; projectors throw a relatively blurry image and you're not that
close to them as a rule; the jaggies get smoothed out a bit.

PowerPoint 97 and onwards share the same file format. There's no specific XP
format, so I'm not sure what you mean here.

Hi Steve and Sonia:

It's the 2003 viewer that seems to have the problem.

With or without animations applied to text?

Both.

The text is ragged for letters with circles and curves (O, S, C, etc.)
and letters with diagonal lines (M, W, V A, etc.)

The letters appear like they did on PCs in the good old DOS days when
PCs came with screens that displayed only 3 colours.

All fonts and sizes are affected. Contrast and colors make no
difference. As well, I ran all my testing on the same system with WIN
98SE & Office XP. Please note that my pictures and graphics in the
2003 Viewer are superb.

My problem is just the text with its ragged edges and the slight
change in text position when it sits just above a rectangular box on
my slide. For whatever the reasons, PPT Viewer 2003 moves the text
slightly down and it overlaps the top horizontal line of the box.
PowerPoint 97 and onwards share the same file format. There's no specific XP
format, so I'm not sure what you mean here.

I thought that creating a PPT presentation in an older PPT version
might possibly be the reason for the jagged edges.
