PPT 2007 corrupted--no audio, video, animation panel

June, 2007: Purchased Dell xps 410 (core 2 cpu 6600 @ 2.4 GHz and 3 gigs RAM)
with Vista Ultimate preinstalled. Added Office 2007 Enterprise and began
transferring 2003 PPTs to PPTX 2007 files. Realized that my college did not
have Office 2007, translated back to 2003 compatible PPTs and audio-video
clips would no longer play. Copied PPT files and clips to Compaq nc8430 XP
Pro and all ran fine. Files on Dell machine remained mute.

Contacted Dell support (India) and they had me reinstall Office 2007 (did
not fix), then reinstall media codecs (no change) and they gave up.

In Dec, 2007 wanted to fix problem, so started with Dell support in Utah and
they said I would have to speak with the Dell "On-Call" support team who
could fix the problem. Called them. Spent first ten minutes to decline a Dell
credit card, but agreed to $269--four instance tech support as the Utah Dell
tech folk said they would fix the problem. The India techie could not listen
to the problem. He had already a list of things to check. After four hours
online, and controlling my desktop machine, he gave me the 800 number for
Microsoft and said they would help me.

Dialed the number which is invalid (should have seen that one coming). Of
course, I can no longer reach the India Dell tech support.

Now, my PowerPoints, besides having no audio or video playback, totally lock
up or refuse to budge from a given slide. I can no longer even display the
custom animation pane. I want to toss the Dell out the window, but have an
upcoming class to teach....

All OS software fully up to date including Vista (6.0.6000)
Earlier today ran Office 2007 update SP1 (but no change to PPT operation)
An hour ago ran the MS Office PPT diagnostic which reported it had repaired
something (could not find out what was fixed), but NO change to corrupted
files.

So am really stuck.... PPT 2007 files that will not play audio-video on the
Dell, but work fine on all other XP machines, and now no custom animation
screen will display, plus slides--in edit mode--will just lock up and refuse
to change.

Dell took my money and gave up (will think long and hard before buying
another Dell), and MS Office Diagnostics say that PPT is now fixed, but it's
not.

Can anyone shine a bit of light on the problem, other than my stupidity in
giving Dell an extra $269 for nothing?

You might want to start by removing and then reinstalling your Office 2007. You also might want to reinstall Windows Media Player,as that will install the MCI player, which is what PowerPoint uses to play audio/video files. Might also want to look at Austin Meyers Plays For certain. you can get a free evaluation copy here http://www.playsforcertain.com/

It sounds like you have more than one issue going on here and it may take a
bit of time to work through them. Why don't you drop me an email (copy this
post so I will know where it came from) and I will see if we can't get you
going again.

Folks, if we get it worked out I'll follow up on what needed to be done in
case others need the same help.
