PPPoE ADSL Connection with XP

I have a question regarding XP and using an ADSL PPPoE connection... I have
done the folloiwng things and nothing seems to work

I have created a new Internet connection using a broad band connection..
-This creates a connection and it keeps wanting to use a dial modem..
I have created a dial-up connection..
-and it does not recognize the modem..
I have done the IP config /release and /renew
-nothing happens
The LAN connection is consistently coming up with an error message saying
that ther is "Limited or no connectivity" yet COVAD can see the packets and
the modem is good. I have isolated this by plugging in a LapTop with the same
OS and same settings.. The laptop works but not the tower..

I have alsow run the Install CD that comes with the install kit but no luck..
I was wondering if anyone else out there has the same issue..

Read my other reply...

I highly suggest that you get a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41. It, not the
PC, will make the PPPoE connection and it knows how to release/renew an IP.

In addition, the Router will act as either a simplistic FireWall or based upon the model you
get, a full FireWall. This will protect you from Internet worms such as; Bugbear, Sasser,
Blaster, etc and from Hackers. There are *many* other benefits as well to such a device.

For a start, you can go into Internet Explorer /Tools /Internet
Options /Connections and tell it to never dial (put a dot in the
"Never dial a connection" line). You can also get rid of any dial-up
connection you may have created, it's not needed, and it keeps trying
to use it instead of the LAN.

That should take care of it wanting to dial - not sure if that will
fix everything else.
