That's easy...go to regedit...HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Lnkfile and on the right
side under Name right click on IsShortcut and select delete.
Reboot and Volia! No more arrows on desktop icons.

you actually helped someone??? historical moment! Ok its hard for you we
know but stretching your brain to help people with shortcut arrows is a good
step!

in a couple of years you might even be able to tell them how to customize
the icon further!

For those who like the Gadget Bar, App Launcher V3 is a worthy download that
allows one to clean up the desktop. All of your apps and frequently
accessed folders can be opened from the Gadget Bar, and none of these
shortcuts will have the arrow. Simply drag and drop the shortcuts onto App
Launcher in the Gadget Bar.

One caveat though. If you drag the shortcuts from the Desktop and then
delete those same shortcuts from the Desktop, it won't work. Create a
folder, such as C:\Shortcuts, fill it with the shortcuts you intend to use,
then drag them from there.

Also, in the future if you install upgraded versions of App Launcher, delete
the old one first or you will have two instances of App Launcher.
(Right-click on an empty place on the Gadget Bar and chose Add Gadgets...,
and delete it from there.) The newer version will automatically populate
itself with your shortcuts used in the old version.

Why not get rid of the icons. Uncheck "Show Desktop Icons" and place a
"Desktop" toolbar on your taskbar. All of the icons that would normally show
on your desktop will be on the desktop toolbar.

Powertoys is not out yet, but you can rid yourself of the arrows..

I downloaded a French translated TweeakUI from the net
http://telechargement.zebulon.fr/tweak-ui.html
and amazingly it worked with Vista. I do not even
recall setting up as XP compatible.

An old version : 1.33.

It may be possible to find the original English language version
on the net.

Have not tried to remove the arrow, but it did remove the
".shortcut" word from my new shortcuts.

I hope it works for you.

No. At least not yet.

Mike has told you how to get rid of the arrows, but I want to urge you
not to do so. They are not stupid at all. The arrows serve an
important function--providing quick visual identification of a
shortcut. If you remove the arrows, you run the substantial risk that
sooner or later you will delete something you wanted to keep, thinking
that you were just deleting a shortcut to it.

Who cares? How much time do you spend looking at the desktop?

And why wouldn't one use the handy visual clue as to which icon
represented a shortcut and which a file/program? These clues were
designed by MSFT at great expense and with some trouble so that
morons could use PCs without getting too confused; so why not take
advantage?

Don't know about you, but the shortcuts on my PC are on the desktop, the
files they associate with are not. Thus the whole "shortcut" thing. It is
easy and simple to know what is a shortcut, just by where it is (for most
folks I would guess, but could be wrong).

Not only that but you get that nifty little pop-up saying "deleting shortcut
does not remove program..." or the like when you try to delete a shortcut
and "deleting this file may cause some stuff not to work..." or the like
when you try to delete the real deal.

Or maybe MS went to great expense to remove those warnings in Vista.
Haven't deleted a shortcut in Vista yet to know.

Well, perhaps because Microsoft's customers aren't all the "morons"
you think Microsoft thinks they are.

The fact is, the short-cut arrows ARE stupid, and Microsoft should add
a way for its users to toggle them on/off or remove them entirely if
they desire.

Until then, third-parties will continue to produce excellent products
to add the functions to Windows Microsoft should add.

One such product, Frameworx's "Vista Shortcut Arrow Remover" stands
out. It has exactly one function: It allows the user to remove or add
the short-cut arrow, along with the "- Shortcut " extension from the
filename.

Nope, Steve, the warnings are all still there.

From my way of thinking, "shortcuts" have a good purpose: they make
it much easier to launch applications, which are many times several
layers deep in a path branch or with hard-to-remember file names.

BTW, Steve: shortcuts may be placed anywhere in the Path structure.
They are not restricted to the Desktop.
