In PowerPoint 2002/XP and above,
One possible way is to add an Entrance effect(eg: Fade/appear). Set the
Start: "On click" to "After previous".

Then, add exit effect (eg:Fade/appear). Set the Start: "On click" to "With
previous".
Right click on the exit effect, select timing. Set the delay to less than
one second (0.1 - 0.9).

Do note that PowerPoint does not do well in timing, so the performance may
varies in different system or each time you run the slide show.
