PowerPoint 2007 Crashes When Opening

M

MrSchmooshies

I've already seen the information about HP print drivers not always playing
well with PPT 2007 (not the problem here).

When I open a file with PowerPoint 2007, regardless of the size, it causes
the program to crash. When I open the program in safe mode, it seems to open
okay, but the second I do anything in it, it crashes. I've looked around and
I can't find any reason why only PowerPoint exclusively would be crashing.
Office Diagnostics gives everything a clean bill of health. My computer is
fully updated, protected by an antivirus program, and has been well
maintained. Any suggestions?

What Steve said.

Also, if you go to Office Button | PPT Options | Add-ins, what's installed
there?

Hey! I can actually post again. Silly Windows 7... (disclaimer: I grabbed my
copy too) This is a work computer, so I couldn't do anything over the
weekend.

Thanks, but the printer thing did absolutely nothing to change the
situation. I'd already tested that, but I went through the instructions
step-by-step just in case that was the problem.

As for PowerPoint Options, that's not really possible, as the program
crashes before I can get there. I've never installed any Add-ins, though, so
that wouldn't be a problem on my end (unless MS added something without my
knowledge).

Starting to think I'm gonna have to reinstall. Fun times there.

Well, add-ins can be installed even if you don't install an actual *add-in.*
For example, if you install Adobe Acrobat, it's going to install plug-ins to
the Office applications.

You might try running Office Diagnostics / Repair from Windows Control
Panel's Add-Remove Programs (or whatever that is in Win7).

Alright, here goes. It didn't give me an AHA, but might give you one (most of
this looks like gibberish to me, though it looks like ppcore.dll might be the
problem?

Faulting application powerpnt.exe, version 12.0.6300.5000, stamp 47606dee,
faulting module ppcore.dll, version 12.0.6307.5000, stamp 47dc726a, debug? 0,
fault address 0x000c8c4c.

Above is from the crash, listed as an Error in EV.

Bucket 1092506956, bucket table 1, faulting application powerpnt.exe,
version 12.0.6300.5000, stamp 47606dee, faulting module ppcore.dll, version
12.0.6307.5000, stamp 47dc726a, debug? 0, fault address 0x000c8c4c.

Above here is from "Information" 10 seconds after the crash (I sent an error
report to MS).

Thanks again for your help.

Still nothing new. Still crashes before I can do anything. And just to recap:

I installed the test print driver. 3 separate times. To the letter. With the
HP LaserJet 4V/4MV PostScript. I've also run Office Diagnostics many times,
which has found nothing. I've searched my computer for add-ins, and I
couldn't find any (*.ppa and *.ppam, including hidden and system files.. not
sure of other extensions for add-ins, suggestions welcome). Please note that
we do NOT use an HP printer (nor have we ever), nor has the printer situation
changed here. We use a Magicolor 5550, and before this happened, everything
on my computer worked flawlessly. It still prints for everything just fine
except PowerPoint. Yes, I've disabled it as the default printer. I'm keeping
it set on the test printer until this is resolved, in case that's still
suspected.

I'm sorry if I'm coming off a little snippy here, but I want to make sure
that you understand that I've listened to your suggestions and followed them
thus far, so getting the same suggestions again doesn't really help me.

To reiterate the problem: when I open PowerPoint, it crashes (Encountered a
problem, must be closed, etc.). If I open in Safe Mode, it looks okay, until
I try to do ANYTHING, then it crashes again as before. Opening files leads to
a crash as well. Office now thinks that pretty much all of my powerpoint
files (.pptx and .ppt, doesn't matter which) are evil. I'm using Windows XP
SP3, for the record.

Thanks again for the help. I wish it was just the standard problem, but it
really doesn't seem like that's the case this time, unfortunately.

I just finished trying with a new user, PowerPointer, which I thought would
be appropriate for use if it worked.

Sadly, this was not the case. I ran Diagnostics again, and it still couldn't
come up with why PowerPoint is crashing. Great idea, though. I never would've
thought to try that, mostly because I'm the only user of this computer. When
I opened PPT for the first time under PowerPointer, I was even able to select
the startup stuff like the online help and the "periodically downloaded file"
thing, both of which I selected. I don't believe the latter to be a problem
simply because I didn't start doing that until after this nasty little
problem arose.

Safe mode appears to be more stable (the program actually manages to open
completely); however, as soon as I try to do anything (access the MS button
menu to check for add-ins, type anything into the title box, change tabs,
etc.), the program crashes again.

This includes both my login and the "PowerPointer" login that I had created.
