powermax (for Maxtor disks) problem

Gergely Buday

Hi Folks,

I have a malfunctioning Maxtor drive, so decided to run a low-level
format against it (any comments?).

I downloaded powermax for my 71336 AP drive, and created the boot
diskette.
I put the diskette. Everything went fine, the first page told me about
how to be careful with the drive, etc, and asked me to press F8. I
did. Then another screen appeared and again F8 was asked _not_ to
interrupt but to continue. I pressed F8, and that interrupted the
program. I tried several times, with the same result.

I looked at the manual found on Maxtor's home page, but there were no
references to this behaviour.

Do anybody have an explanation for this, or, what would be better, any
hint how to run successfully powermax?

Thanks in advance

- Gergely

ps: I made the diskette on another machine. Should this be the source
of the problem?

That would be Maxtor's suggestion for any drive which is malfunctioning.
I'm not sure whether it does any good, or if it just slightly
postpones the inevitable.

Maybe try a previous version of Powermax? I forget the exact
circumstances, but I've seen the latest version hang, while Version
3.0.4 worked fine.

Where can I get such a one?

In what way is it malfunctioning? Have you run the diagnostic program on
it? What was the result? There is no point in trying to low-level format a
faulty drive.

There is no point in trying to low-level format a faulty drive.

There is in determining whether it is actually faulty or not.
