PowerArchiver 6.11 bug?

A

Adam Leinss

I decided to use PowerArchiver 6.11 (last freeware version) for users
that need to ZIP/UNZIP files. It's very close to Winzip, but there
seems to be a bug with it. If you open an existing ZIP file and click
Add, it deletes all the files in the ZIP file before it adds the
addition files! If you subsequently try the Add feature on the same
ZIP file while it still is open, the Add button works as expected. You
can, however, drag and drop files to the PowerArchiver window all day
and that works fine. I downgraded to 6.0 (2000 version) and I get the
same results. I downgraded further to 5.2 and the Add feature works as
expected! Anyone else notice this?

Thanks,
Adam

I use PowerArchiver 6.11.0 dated 01 March 2001
under Win98_SE and don't have this problem ....

Adding files to an existing .zip file
using the Add button on the toolbar works fine here
without deleting anything ....

I just did a quick test to check it out ....

This is extremely weird! I just tried it with the same results on
Windows 2003, Windows 2000 and Windows XP and 6.0 and 6.11 both have
the delete problem on these operating systems. The program, as you
indicated, does work correctly on Windows 98! Version 5.6 seems to
work fine on XP, 2000 and 2003! Anyone else having this issue or am I
completely nuts?

We are also converting our users from Windows 98 to Windows 2000, so
this is a real pain. I guess I'll just use version 5.6. I'm just
looking down the road when a user modifies a document and tries adding
it back into a ZIP file they received and then it deletes of their
files in the ZIP file, eek!

Thanks,
Adam

At least my sanity is now fixed!

(Same, here. W98 / PA 6.11 / no probs)

The one thing I did learn to watch out for, it's .cab. Then any kind of
"Add" action deletes all prior contents. I've the idea this is a matter
independent of PowerArch, and instead to do with the nature of that .cab
format. Still, IMO, it'd be kinder of PowerArch to prompt with a warning,
prior to all the files in that archive type getting deleted.

Try IzArc instead. I switched from PowerArchiver to IzArc since IzArc
supports more compression formats. It works great!

Adam,

Have you applied the "Unofficial PowerArchiver Update" for the last freeware
version 6.11?
See http://exuberant.ms11.net/archiver.html

I suspect this update will fix the bug since it has new DLL's for the ZIP
compression!

The description suggests getting the latest DLLs at:

Thanks, it did not fix the problem unforunately. It did add some cool
icons though! I've commited myself to using version 5.6 since it
seems to work OK. It's very disappointing that such a basic feature
would have been broken in a later version and that the bug was not
found between versions 6.0 and 6.11. I cannot complain too much,
though: saving $30/copy (instead of getting Winzip) is a nice feeling!
