Power Supply Tripping

I have recently been having problems with my computer, which I believe
are power supply related. Now when I try to turn on my computer, my
power supply trips. I press the button to turn it on and you can hear
it like its shutting down and turning back on, and it just keeps doing
that until I shut it down. My computer is apparently now unstable and
its very critical that I get it up and running A.S.A.P.

Is my problem simply just the power supply is done for or what?

why not try a different supply?

Try disconnecting / removing items inside the PC; disconnect hard
drives; see if the PC will power up. Pull out the adapter cards; ditto.
Disconnect CD, floppy, etc. and try to power up. The problem may not be
in the power supply.

I would follow up on the advice to disconnect everything to see if something
might be causing the power supply to trip. Also, I would stop fooling with
the power supply before a big surge occurs - try experimenting once you
disconnect everything and get a new supply.

I lost a AthlonXP 2100+ (the fastest at the time) from not taking the time
to figure out the problem with an older power supply which seemed to suffer
from something like your problem. Eventually it caused the CPU to overamp
and burn itself out - even my lights started to dim as the chip died. I
still have the mobo with its scorched socket - the kicker is the mobo still
works fine.

The only way to find out is try replacing it with a known working one of
adequate power output.

Also check the PS plug to the mobo (2 rows of white thingies). Your case
happened to my friend when his plugs got rusted.
