Power settings on my laptop

On my laptop, running XP, I use to have an option in my power options which
had several options in the dropdown for actions to take when I close the lid.
I now have only " Do nothing". I had to reload my OS. but I don't remember
having to do anything special the last time I reloaded the OS. Specifically,
I want the system to hibernate. How do I get that function? I do not have a
"Hibernate" tab.

have you looked into your swap file size settings? sometimes if the minimal
amount is not set low enough, it won't permit hibernation to function. try
setting it temporarily to something like 2 for min and maybe 1400 max then
reboot then see if hibernate appears. ...
