When I attempt to open a word document in power point it gets spread out into

When you open a Word document in PowerPoint or you use the send to PowerPoint
feature in Word, the document is interpreted as an outline and each heading 1
item becomes a new slide.

If you just want to insert a page from Word on a slide in PowerPoint, copy/
paste special.

That's what it's supposed to do. It converts top-level Word text to slide
titles, lower level word text into various PPT body text indent levels.

Put your word doc into outline view to get a better idea what'll happen.
