I have Windows XP and office 2003 professional version. Received a Power
Point 2000 presentation and it will not open. Error message states Power
Point cannot Read the file. The file does end in .ppt

It sounds like you don't have SP1 for Office installed. It should fix this
problem. While connected to the net, go to Help--> Check for Updates and
follow the Office Online links to get SP1 for Office.

The obvious question first: does the file name end in .PPT ?

If not, make it so and try again. You may need to slap Windows out of its
silly default habit of hiding file extensions.

This explains how to do that (and a whole bunch of other stuff that you really
really want to do before using PPT in earnest)

Do this before using PowerPoint seriously
