power point and copying a slide in to another slide, making 7 miniatures within a specific slide

I am in power point tutorials. My instructions are to go to slide #2 and make several miniatures within this particular slide. The instructions call for me to go Slide #8 in slide sorter view, click copy on the menu bar, go to slide #2 in Normal View, and then use the paste special to insert the picture in slide #8 in to slide #2, and then I have to reformat the picture in to slide #2. after this step is completed, there will be a total of #7 miniature slides within slide #2. I have tried copying, pasting, using the special paste feature, and the only function that happens is slide #8 automatically makes a new slide and it labels itself slide #3. It will not copy in to slide #2 as per the instructions in my power point 2002 tutorial book. Can anybody help me?

When it says, "go to slide #2 in Normal View" you may not have the slide
selected. You may have just clicked on the thumbnail version in the left
hand pane. That's a good way to locate and jump to Slide #2, but then move
your cursor over to the big image of slide #2 and click the left mouse
button to make sure that the slide is selected. Then do the paste special.
