power options turn off monitor no longer works

XP Pro SP2 Dell 8400 Dell 19" flat panel monitor - machine a couple of years
old. Up until doing the Microsoft Updates last week this machine has worked
properly since new on 'Power Options - turn off monitor after n minutes'.
Now, regardless of the number of minutes in the setting, the monitor never
shuts down. I've tried resetting the number of minutes, etc. with no luck.
Monitor stays on all the time.

i think you have selected the power scheme "always on" .by this you can not
turn of monitor.just change this to "home and desk.then select the minuts and
apply them.
