post-SP2 Data Error:(cyclic redundancy check)

Hi,

After SP2 was pushed onto my system even w/ Auto Updates turned off on Oct
11 I'm having problems now. In order of severity they are:

1) Cannot delete files - each time I try, the disk spins for 5-10 secs then
I get the error msg -> Data Error:(cyclic redundancy check)

2) Autorun stopped -- my CDs and DVDs no longer auto-play when I load them
in the drive

3) Auto Updates is grayed out now -- will not even allow me to shut off Auto
Updates again (not that that actually works, I found out the hard way)

4) Certain functions like Windows Explorer and the Shut Down windows take a
long time to appear

Please help! Thanks.

A CRC error tells you that you have a serious problem with
the concerned medium. If it's the hard disk, back up your data
while you can, then replace it.

Backup your data IMMEDIATELY.
Go to the web page for the manufacturer of your hard disk drive, download
their diagnostics utility and test your hard drive for problems.

Yes - what I am saying is it sounds like your hard drive is dying.

Pegasus, Shenan,

Thanks very much. Will certainly do what you've said. Thankfully I backed up
most of my critical data (except programs) already. Will take care of the
rest ASAP and contact Maxtor right away (it's one of their Diamond 250GB SATA
drives).

Thanks again,
Robert
