Possible Virus

Hello all. This is my dilemna: Pointer moves around screen, but when you
click on icons nothing happens. Netscape just flashes and nothing connects.
Clicking on Word will bring up hourglass display, but nothing happens. I can
not log off with PC, have to cut power off. Cutting it back on, same thing
happens.
Any help is appreciated, I'm leaning toward virus..??
Thanks

Try restarting in Safe Mode. (Tap F8 repeatedly while starting) Use msconfig
to disable any unwanted startup-entries. Then examine the list of processes
in Task Manager for anything suspicious.

The best way to determine if you have a virus is by scanning with a
full-featured, current version (not earlier than 2005) av using updated
definitions. If you don't have one installed:

Go through these general malware removal steps systematically -
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware

If you do not have a current version antivirus installed (not earlier
than 2005), scan first with Sysclean (information at first link below)
or Dave Lipman's Multi-AV (see second and third links below). Then get,
install, and update a full-featured av and do a thorough scan in Safe
Mode.

Even if you do have a full-featured av installed, it is recommended that
you include scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV, plus Ewido. Do
all prep/finishing work and follow instructions to do all scans in Safe
Mode.

When all else fails, run HijackThis and post your log in one of the
specialty forums listed at the link above (not here, please).

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting
this isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional
computer repair shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
