possible to read CD that didn't finish writing?

I have this friend, don't we all, that swears she saved all her files
onto CD before she reformatted her drive to install XP. Now she can't read
that same disk.
She is Russian so there is a bit of a language problem but I suspect she
wrote the file under win98 using some built-in software that came with the
PC (most likely roxio directCD in my opinion) and now can't read it with XP.
This makes sense to me as directCD uses a different format. It may not be
the case but it sounds reasonable.
My question is; what utility can I use to read this CD other than
directCD? There are Hard disk sector readers out there, do any exist for
CD'S

Do a Google search for UDF Reader.

Hi,

Your presumption is likely correct DirectCD is a packet writing format, and
WindowsXP sometimes has trouble with it (the native burning utility uses
ISO-9660). The solution is to install the same software that was used to
write the CD.

.:mmac:.

Nutcase (giggle),

Would it be specific to the OS at all? I mean that if I install directCD on
my XP machine (shudder), and the CD was created with win98 , will that
present yet another layer of problem?

.:mmac:.

Is it that generic? Just UDF? Not vendor specific UDF?
Roxio has a "driver" that I can use but what else will that foul up?

Hi,

Nope. WindowsXP just needs the UDF support to read the disk.

Like the nic, huh?

If you explore on the Roxio or Nero sites you should find a program UDF
Volume reader - free download

.:mmac:.

I found that reader in thier update site and upon installation it says that
"Roxio UDF reader has not beed detected"
Duh! thats why I need it! Do I have to have roxio to add this?
