Possible to get net connection going through another comp?

I want to be able to connect one laptop to another with a modem cable and
have one of the computers connected to the internet with an ethernet cable so
i can have a net connection on both computers. Is this possible. If so how do
i set it up?

You can't connect two phone line jacks directly together.
They each need to plug into a live phone line.

You could plug them both into live phone lines, and call one from the other,
but that sounds like a bit of nonesense. We need to look for a better
solution.

What other ways can you connect to the second machine?
Does it have a LAN connection? USB? a spare card slot?
We can use these in various ways to provide the Internet connection.

Also, how does the first machine connect to the Internet?
You said an ethernet cable, but what exactly does it plug into?
A modem, or a router, or what?
