In case anyone else runs into this error message:
"The Win16 Subsystem was unable to enter Protected Mode, DOSX.EXE must be in
your AUTOEXEC.NT and present"
I was having this error message and given some suggestions of things to try,
but none of the suggestions worked.
In my case, I found the problem by going to Control Panel, System, Advanced,
Environment Variables. The Path in System Variables was corrupt, which was
the source of the error message for me.
Of course, I have no idea how the corruption happened or even what the
Environmental Variables are or do, but . . .
I've spent hours & hours over the last two days trying to find the solution,
and it seems that lots of others have run into the same problem.
So, if anyone else sees that error message and the standard suggestions
don't solve the problem, check to make sure the Path in the System
Environment Variables is correct.
