Positioning Rules in Rules List

Outlook MVPs:

I run ...
Outlook 2002 (10.2627.4219) SP-2

on ...
Windows XP Professional
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp2.030422-1633 :
Service Pack 1)

In [Tools > Rules Wizard > Apply rules in the following
order:], I have the following 3 rules ...

1. Exception List
2. <Junk E-Mail Text String>
3. Junk E-mail Rule

Do senders on my Exception List _bypass_ rules 2 & 3? In
other words, do I have Exception List positioned in the
correct place to prohibit senders from being routed to the
Junk E-mail folder if their messages happen to contain the
Junk E-Mail Text String?

are ...

1. Exception List (client only)
Apply this rule after the message arrives from
senders on my _Exception_List_
Do not search message for commercial or adult
content

2. This message uses a character set that is not supported
by the Internet Service.
Apply this rule after the message arrives with
_This_message_uses_a_character_set_that_is_not_supported_by
_the_Internet_Service._ in the subject or body
move it to the _Junk_E-mail_ folder

3. Junk E-mail Rule (client-only)
Apply this rule after the message arrives
suspected to be junk e-mail or from _Junk_Senders_
move it to the _Junk_E-mail_ folder

In summary, rules 1 & 3 are just Outlook default formats
for the Exception List and the Junk E-mail Rule. In rule
2, the text string is "This message uses a character set
that is not supported by the Internet Service.". My use
of underscores is meant to indicate where the Outlook rule
text is underlined.

Alright, well add the action "and stop processing rules" to all the rules
and you should be fine. This prevents that you end up with duplicates when
more than one rule applies to you.

A follow-up question.

When I try to add "and stop processing rules" to rule 1, I
notice the Modify button in the Rules Wizard dialog box is
not highlighted, and I have not been able to figure out
what I should do to modify a rule when the Modify button
is disabled.

Could you please post a walk-thru example of what should
be done to modify an existing rule, or could you refer me
to a tutorial which covers this subject.

Is the rule selected? when you try to modify it? Otherwise delete it and
recreate the rule.
