For over two months, I have not been able to read anything at the Hotmail
site. There are many messages in it; but when I click on to read them, an
infinite number of pornographic adds pop up and clicking back to make them
dissappear and go back to mail only brings more porno adds. Hot mail is no
longer usable. But this problem is now spreading: on Internet Explorer,
when trying to read a newspaper, for example, when I click to look at the
county section, exactly the same problem occurs. The number of consecutive
pornographic pop ups is unstoppable and that particular site is no longer of
any use to me. This looks as if the problem is spreading and my computer is
vital to me because I am homebound by disability. Please someone help me
stop this problem. Thanks, A.J.

Hi Anthony,

Some how adware was installed on your computer. This can be done by just
visiting a web site and have your activeX enabled or install any one of the
toolbars, except Google and yahoo, or free programs out there.

Adware is a 2.4 billion dollar industry, (Webroot), and there are teams of
brilliant programmers working for many companies trying to get a piece of the
pie. It's the California gold rush on a global scale. So, that innocent
looking program you install on your computer could trash it. Be careful.

You can try Ad-aware or Sypbot to remove the programs. They work some times
but, like I said, some of the best programmers are working hard to make sure
you can't get rid of their program.

In a lot of cases the programs are self healing. Delete them and they will
re-install. They use many dlls scattered about your system to bring back the
program if you try and uninstall it. You can also look into Hijack. Do a
search.

In most of the cases we have to re-image the hard drive to bring the
computer back to its healthy state.

Just a suggestion. Install the updates from Microsoft often. It will help
you keep running. Set the security on your browser and change Prompt for
activeX.

Hope this helps.

When visiting porn sites, always be careful not to download/install
their "free" viewers. You'll get more than expected, every time. To
repair the current situation, uninstall the "viewer(s)" provided and
then use Ad-Aware from www.lavasoft.de and SpyBot Search and Destroy
from www.safer-networking.org/ to clean up any residue. Both have
free versions for personal use.

You should also try using MSConfig to see if something is being
started each time you reboot.

Additionally, Look in the C:\Documents and Settings\All
Users\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up and C:\Documents and
Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs\Start Up folders, and in the
system registry, primarily in the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run and
HKCU\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run keys.

varieties of scumware are available here:
